Opioid Prescribing Continues to Decline

Brendan Joyce, PharmD, Administrator of Pharmacy Services with the ND Dept of Human Services reports the latest statistics on opioid prescribing for North Dakota Medicaid patients. Statistics show that the Morphine Equivalent Doses (MED) for Medicaid Recipients Dropped by 72 percent:

  • In 2012, there were 23 people taking higher amounts of narcotics than the top person in 2017
  • In 2012, there were 35 people taking higher amounts of narcotics than the second highest person in 2017
  • In 2012, the top 81 patients used the same amount of narcotics as the top 500 patients in 2017
  • In 2012, the average MED for the top 500 patients was 148. In 2017, it is 61.75
